Definitions of Heating and Cooling Terms

Here’s a little bit more information on some of the terms we use.

AFUE – Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency

This number, shown as a percent, tells you how much of your fuel is being converted to heat energy (as opposed to being wasted). As you would guess, the higher the number the better. The quality of the installation can help your furnace reach it’s full potential AFUE.

The Gas Burner of Your Furnace and Why it Counts

You’ll sometimes come across labels like “multi-stage furnace” or “modulating furnace”. In most cases they’re talking about the gas burner.

Your furnace’s gas burner is where the fuel is burned. In the gas burner assembly is a valve that regulates how much fuel gets through and therefore how intensely the fire burns.

There are 3 different types of burner and it makes a huge difference in both the efficiency of your furnace and the evenness of the temperature in your home.

The least efficient type of burner is single stage. It can only burn at one level. A two-stage burner can go at full intensity or partial. A fully modulating gas burner adjusts the intensity to the heating conditions: how cold is it outside, etc.

It’s more efficient for your gas burner to work at a lower intensity. It’s easier and more efficient for your furnace to be just topping up the heat as needed, as opposed to blasting on and then shutting off. A two-stage or fully modulating furnace will also keep your home’s temperature more even and your family more comfortable.

Blower Motors and Their Speeds Also Help with Efficiency

The blower is important because it blows the heated air into your ductwork and out to the rooms in your home. If you’ve got air quality equipment installed like humidifiers or air cleaners, the blower fan keeps air moving so you can get the benefit of the treated air.

Variable speed blowers are the most efficient, then two to four speeds. Single speed is the least efficient.

As with burners, the more speeds your blower has the better the efficiency and the better your comfort level.
