Whether you’re a student, a sports fan, or a parent this community offers many opportunities for entertainment and personal enrichment. These come mainly from University Height’s close proximity to the University of Calgary, McMahon Stadium, and the Stadium Shopping Centre.
The University of Calgary
University Heights is located just south of the University of Calgary’s main campus, and was once the home of Prime Minister Stephen Harper when he was getting his degree. It’s the perfect place to live if you are attending the University as well, since most of your classes will only be a short walk away.
Being near campus has its perks even if you’re not a student. For example, it brings you in close proximity to Calgary’s Olympic Oval, which was used for speed skating events during the 1988 Winter Olympics. The Oval is often open to the public, and you can utilize these public skate times for getting in some exercise or simply for having some fun with friends and family. Make sure the check the public schedules before going, however.
Another interesting place to check out at the University of Calgary is the Rozsa Centre, which often hosts exciting events like conferences, concerts and lectures. You can take a look at the university’s calendar to see if any of the upcoming events might interest you.
McMahon Stadium And The Surrounding Area
The University of Calgary also owns the football stadium known as McMahon Stadium, which is located just to the east of University Heights. McMahon Stadium is the home of Calgary’s CFL team, the Calgary Stampeders, as well as to the University of Calgary Dinos, the Alberta Football League, and the Canadian Junior Football League.
If you’re interested both in watching sports and in playing them yourself, then you will also want to pay a visit to the nearby Foothills Athletic Park. Complete with tennis courts, a baseball diamond, a 400 meter track, and four sports fields, Foothills Athletic Park is the perfect place to head out and get some exercise. Furthermore, located just north of the park, you will also find the Foothills Aquatic Centre. Housing both a lane pool and a wading pool, the Foothills Aquatic Centre is great for those who are seeking exercise or recreation. It also offers swimming lessons and aquatic fitness classes.
Stadium Shopping Centre
Though University Heights is a small community, it is home to some great restaurants, all of which are conveniently located within the Stadium Shopping Centre just off Uxbridge Drive. There are many different restaurants to choose from depending on what you are in the mood for.
One popular choice is Moose McGuire’s, a local pub that has been in operation since 1995. It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends and get fantastic deals on weekly wings and ribs nights. Another prime location for feel-good food and a friendly atmosphere is Redwater Rustic Grill, where Stampeders fans can claim a free dessert with their ticket stubs. A couple other local and original restaurants in the Stadium Shopping Centre that you should definitely try out and take your friends and family to are Olive Grove Original Pizza and Saigon Star Vietnamese Cuisine.
As you can see, what University Heights may lack in population and land area, it more than makes up for in recreational and dining opportunities.
