Homeowners love them for their great performance, energy efficiency, and dependability. They’ve even won Liberty Research’s Top HVAC Brand award for the past five years: 2015 through 2019.

Heating and Cooling Terms FAQ

In the lists above, we’ve used some terms specific to the HVAC (heating, cooling and ventilation) industry.

What Does AFUE Mean?

Annual fuel utilization efficiency. It’s expressed as a percentage, and the higher the number the more efficient the furnace. It tells you how much of your energy is being converted to heat, and how much is wasted.

What’s So Important About the Gas Burner?

The gas burner of your furnace is where the fuel is burned to create heat for your home. The valve controls the amount of fuel, and therefore the heat intensity.

Having a burner with multiple stages means that the furnace can adjust the flame intensity to the amount of heat you need to keep your house warm. It’s more efficient in the long run for your furnace to constantly keep up than to let the temperature drop too much and then have to go to full power to catch up.

A multi stage furnace is also more comfortable for your home, because it means a more even temperature.

In order of least efficient to most, it goes: single stage, two stage, fully modulating.

Why is the Blower Motor Important?

The blower basically fans the heated air into your ductwork and then into the rest of your home. It also keeps improved air moving if you have any air quality equipment installed, like humidifiers or air cleaners.

The more speeds your blower has the better. It keeps air cycling nicely and helps with keeping temperatures even. As with gas burners, it’s also more efficient.

In order of least efficient and comfortable to most, it goes: single speed, two speed, four speed, variable.

How To Find the Right Trane Furnace for Your Home

You see, bigger is not always better when it comes to heating and cooling equipment.

You’d think that we’d always be trying to sell you the most powerful furnace made. But the truth is that one that’s too big for your home will be turning itself on and off more often, will work less efficiently and won’t last as long. It’s important that we measure your home, get an idea of how well insulated it is, how high the ceilings are, etc. That way, we make sure we recommend the right size of furnace for your home.

Once you’ve decided on the model you prefer, we’ll give you a quote in writing, detailing all the costs involved. There are no surprise fees added to top of the quote – what you see in writing is the real price.

Then we leave the decision up to you. We give you the time you need to make up your mind. We don’t believe in pressuring people to buy before they’re ready.

Kevin was in today to replace our furnace, he was knowledgeable, he took the time to go over differences between the old and new. He did a great job, looks very neat and tidy, the house is warm and safe again!
