How Much Does Air Conditioning Cost Per Month?

What Does “It Costs $X Per Month” Actually Include?

Most estimates focus on electricity use, but your total bill may also include delivery charges and fixed fees. Alberta’s Utility Consumer Advocate explains that electricity bills typically include both energy charges and delivery charges, and can also include other charges depending on your plan. That is why two homes with similar cooling habits can still see different totals.

How Can I Estimate My Monthly Central AC Cost In Calgary?

You can build a reasonable estimate using three inputs:

  • Your air conditioner’s power draw (kilowatts)
  • How many hours does it run in a month
  • The energy price on your bill (dollars per kilowatt-hour), while remembering delivery and fixed fees may still apply

Step 1.

Find power draw. Check the outdoor unit nameplate or the owner’s manual for input power (kW) or for volts and amps. If you only see volts and amps, multiplying volts × amps gives a rough estimate of power draw. Actual running watts may be lower because most systems have a power factor. Use the nameplate “kW” (if listed) or the owner’s manual for the most accurate number. Then divide watts by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts.

Step 2.

Estimate run time. Use your best guess for an average day, then multiply by the number of days in the billing period. A hotter week can mean longer daily run time, even if you do not touch the thermostat.

Step 3.

Estimate the energy-only cost. Multiply kilowatts by monthly hours to get kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your energy price per kilowatt-hour.

Step 4.

Compare against your real bill total. Delivery charges and fixed fees can raise your total above the energy-only estimate.

Example:

If your system draws about 3 kW while running, and it runs about 6 hours per day:

  • 6 hours per day times 30 days equals 180 hours per month
  • 3 kW times 180 hours equals 540 kWh per month

Then multiply 540 kWh by the energy price on your bill. Your total bill can still be higher once delivery charges and other fees are included.

Does SEER Affect How Much It Costs To Run An AC Unit?

SEER (and newer SEER2) are efficiency ratings used to compare air conditioners. Higher ratings can use less electricity to deliver the same amount of cooling, all else equal. ENERGY STAR program specifications reference SEER2 (and also explain how it relates to SEER). In real homes, the monthly cost is also shaped by system size, duct condition, airflow, and run time.

Why Is My AC Bill Higher Than The Estimate?

Common reasons include:

  • Longer run time than expected (hot afternoons, sun exposure, warm upper floors)
  • A dirty filter or blocked return grille is restricting airflow
  • Duct leakage or poor balancing that leaves rooms warm, so the thermostat keeps calling for cooling
  • A higher “all-in” total once delivery charges and fixed fees are included

If you are comparing Calgary HVAC services or looking at HVAC companies in Calgary, ask whether airflow and duct performance will be checked, not just whether the outdoor unit turns on.

What Can I Do To Reduce Monthly AC Costs Safely?

Homeowner OK

  • Change your filter on schedule.
  • Keep supply vents and return grilles clear.
  • Close blinds on sun-facing windows during peak afternoon heat.
  • Use a schedule so the AC is not working hard when the house is empty.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris (turn off the power at the disconnect first).

Pro Only

  • Measuring airflow and static pressure.
  • Electrical diagnostics and control testing.
  • Refrigerant handling and charge verification.
  • Duct sealing, balancing, or adding returns.

When Should I Book A Service In Calgary?

When your home cannot maintain a consistent temperature, the system runs for long stretches, or rooms stay uneven, it is time to book an inspection. Many service visits take around an hour, depending on the system and what is found.

If you are searching for HVAC services in Calgary, Knight Plumbing can help with maintenance and repair. If you are considering HVAC installation, a good question to ask is whether airflow will be assessed, not just equipment swapped. If you are comparing “knight plumbing” to other options, look for the same discussion of airflow.

If you want predictable seasonal upkeep, book an inspection and ask about our HVAC Maintenance Plans options.
