Canadian homeowners can take advantage of the energy efficiency rebates currently being offered. In addition to federal grants for Albertans, there may be provincial programs and municipal grants depending on where you live (specifically: Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Grand Prairie, Lethbridge, and Banff).
Unfortunately, the programs offered by Energy Efficiency Alberta have been scrapped by the government, but keep an eye out for similar programs in the future. Eligible homeowners used to be able to save money on new energy-efficient appliances and home upgrades (everything from tankless water heaters, smart thermostats, high-efficiency showerheads, and other energy-efficient products).
As part of the Affordability Action Plan, the Natural Gas Rebate program is being extended (its current end date is March 30th, 2023). You will automatically receive the rebate on your utility bill if you are a natural gas consumer who:
- is connected to the system
- is on either a regulated or competitive plan
- uses less than 2,500 gigajoules of natural gas annually
You can take advantage of this government rebate by making energy efficiency upgrades, such as purchasing eligible Energy Star heating equipment that will use less natural gas than the old system.
HVAC Rebates
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a program that offers grants for energy-efficient home upgrades. Up to $5000 can be put toward the installation of energy-saving or energy-efficient appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and other projects.
Eligible homeowners must get an EnerGuide evaluation at least six months after installation in order to qualify for the grants.
Plumbing Rebates
Obsolete toilets are one of the biggest sources of water waste in your home. Save money by reducing your water consumption. Look for the WaterSense logo when you’re buying a new energy-efficient toilet.
